Over the past few months, I鈥檝e had the pleasure of connecting鈥攂oth remotely and on campus鈥攚ith our elected representatives as they consider a budget proposal for the 2026鈥27 biennium. This proposal would support the 26 colleges and seven universities of Minnesota State, including 海角社区. These meetings have been not only informative but energizing, offering the chance to share the incredible work happening on our campus, tour our facilities, and introduce our passionate students, faculty and staff.

Joining me on these legislative visits was Muna Wazwaz, an NHCC student and part-time student ambassador. For Muna, the experience offered valuable insight into the behind-the-scenes efforts that support higher education, particularly in the areas of funding and budgeting at the state level.

Reflecting on her experience, Muna shared, 鈥淎 memorable part of the visit was when the legislators discussed the intersection of education and IT. It was inspiring to hear them recognize how technological advancements are shaping education and preparing future generations for success. The conversation highlighted how crucial it is to invest in technology to ensure that students are equipped with the skills and resources needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.鈥

As part of the Minnesota State system, NHCC relies on ongoing investments from the state to deliver an extraordinary, affordable, and accessible education to all Minnesotans while also helping to develop a strong, skilled workforce that meets the needs of local businesses.

The current budget request totals $465 million in additional funding over the biennium. This includes support for student critical needs, investments in workforce development, and resources to maintain high-quality academic programs and keep tuition affordable. This proposed funding would directly benefit students, bolster communities through workforce and economic growth, and provide essential resources to sustain the programs and services that drive student success.

According to a 2022 economic contribution analysis by Parker Phillips, Minnesota State is the most effective economic development program in the state, supporting or sustaining $1 out of every $49 in Minnesota鈥檚 economy. At NHCC specifically, the numbers speak volumes, including $264.1 million in annual economic impact, 2,020 jobs supported across the college and community, $21.9 million in combined tax impact, and alumni contribute $125.1 million annually to the economy, supporting 667 jobs.

But beyond the data, the real impact shines through in the voices of our students.

鈥淢y time at NHCC has been a truly rewarding experience. From day one, NHCC鈥檚 diverse and welcoming environment made me feel right at home,鈥 Muna said. 鈥淲hat truly sets NHCC apart is its affordability. Despite the low tuition, NHCC provides an abundance of valuable resources from academic support to career services. The partnership with Bemidji State University is another incredible opportunity, allowing me to continue my education and easily transfer to a four-year institution. That鈥檚 always felt like a dream opportunity to have as a student.鈥

With your support, we can continue fulfilling our mission of engaging students and transforming lives just like Muna鈥檚.
